Review: BLACK ROCK SHOOTER OVA

BLACK ROCK SHOOTER OVA is finally here and damn is it good. An hour long OVA, it is surprisingly good. I didn’t think you can make such a good OVA about BRS but they managed it. I will say this, the plot is a bit weird but I like it, as well as the art direction and everything is awesome, just wish it was a bit longer so they could of done more to this one.

For those who don’t know what BLACK ROCK SHOOTER (BRS) is, it was originally a character created by Huke. Ryo who is a music artist thought it was a version of Hatsune Miku due to the striking resemblance. Ryo decided to use BRS for his Hatsune Miku songs but later found out it was an original design by Huke. Unfortunately, the OVA didn’t really go into detail or explain what the world where BRS and Deadmaster are in. And there is your background on BRS.

The OVA, is a straight to DVD production. Available in Japan but it features subtitles for 7 different languages. I’m not sure if it’s region free, which I highly doubt but feel free to import a copy if you can. The OVA is an hour long which is good but as I mentioned before, wish it was maybe another 30 minute or hour longer just so they can show a little bit more. Maybe a sequel? Highly doubt that… BRS features 3 characters from the real world they are, Mato Kuroi who is the persona for BRS, Yomi Takanashi who is Deadmaster, and Yuu who is… honestly they didn’t say who it is but in the OVA they did show the BRS world character of her. In the BRS world she has a tail and her arms are like monstrous. It’s like a Black Rock Power Fist.

The story is revolved around these 3 characters. Mato Kuroi has just started Junior High and is pretty cheerful and upbeat about it. On the way to school she notices Yomi arriving to school in a very rich car. Mato decides to befriend her by saying odd things to Yomi which she found funny. Mato and Yomi became incredibly close friends, doing club activities, going and leaving school together as well as riding the train. When they became second years they are now in separate classes and things turn for the worst.

Don’t want to spoil too much about it because you should definitely see this OVA for yourself. The OVA features really great music by Ryo and in BRS world scenes where BRS and Deadmaster are fighting the art direction stays true to Huke’s style. I certainly hope they have a OST for this OVA, but I’m sure most of the music used are old songs by Ryo but maybe not. My favorite song from the OVA is the insert song when Mato gave Yomi a gift. I don’t know what the song is called but I like the tune, as well as the ending song of the OVA. The Ending song can be found here.

The only bad thing I don’t like about this anime is how it ended. It just seems like everything is just about to begin then credits roll, what a tease. Keep watching after credits roll. The way that ended made it seem like a possible sequel but honestly don’t see this happening.
